DJI Action 2: Redesigned, Modular 4K Action Camera Announced
The next generation DJI Action 2 is smaller and lighter than the previous OSMO Action featuring a very cool interchangeable magnetic design allowing users to attach a variety of new accessories and surfaces to the camera.
Weighing in at a scant 56 grams, the Action 2 body (camera module) features a dustproof and waterproof (up to 10 meters without additional housing) and drop-proof body.
The form factor has also changed from a GoProesque rectangular shaped body to a smaller, more square shape as seen above.
And the square shape is the key to the Action 2’s versatility as it’s design allows it to accommodate the various addon attachments.
The camera module keeps things simple, featuring a Gorilla Glass covered 1.76-inch OLED touchscreen display on the back, a power button on the top and a button on the side to start/stop recording.
The touchscreen provides access to settings and creative modes and uses touch and swipe gestures to navigate through them.
Camera wise, the Action 2 features a 1/1.7-inch sensor that can record up to 4K 120 fps footage with a 155-degree super-wide angle view.
It also features a newly designed colour temperature sensor to help keep colour tones correct in complex lighting conditions including underwater.
The camera will also capture 12-megapixel stills in either RAW or JPEG formats and features an ISO range for both photo and video of 100 to 6400.
Stabilization is provided by DJI’s RockSteady 2.0 electronic image stabilization technology combined with DJI’s new HorizonSteady technology to maintain a steady horizon and create super smooth looking footage.
The Action 2 is compatible with a range of accessories designed specifically for use with the camera with the main ones being:
The Front Touchscreen module attaches to provide a front facing screen and 4-mic Matrix Stereo sound capture and when connected to the camera offers a max battery life of up to 160 minutes (2.6 hours).
With the Power module attached, battery life is extended from 70 minutes on the camera module alone, to up to 180 minutes (3 hours) and it also includes a microSD card slot.
The new DJI Mic system is a wireless dual-channel recorder with a range of up to 250 metres that works with the Action 2 and is also compatible with smartphones and any device that has a 3.5mm audio input.
The transmitter offers up to 7.5 hours of battery life and up to 5 hours from the receivers or up to 18 hours when attached to the charging case.
There is also a Remote Extension Rod that acts as a selfie stick, tripod and detachable remote control and a Floating Handle that features a hollow design handle incase you let go of the camera while underwater.
